UK hits 18% full fibre mark

The 17% FTTP premises passed milestone was marked on 6th October and now on 12th November we have hit the 18% with FTTP coverage in the UK of some 5.5 million premises i.e. 18.01% of premies.

The speed at which the percentage points are passing is increasing, 37 days for the latest change, previously 39, 43 and 48 days. Whether this trend continues is a measure of both FTTP providers continuing to increase their build rates and our ability to devote resources to finding it all.

The last day actually saw 0.04 added to the total via an extra 12,277 premises. The providers involved in the last days (in alphabetical order) increase were Community Fibre, County Broadband, Fibrus, Gigaclear and Openreach - for the smaller providers our maps include all the new coverage, for Openreach some zoom levels are still rendering. We do account for overlaps and there are some 1.194% of UK premises with 2 or more FTTP options (Virgin Media RFOG is included). The overlap does seem to be growing and was 1.056% at the end of September 2020.

There are now 22 local authorities with FTTP coverage above 50%, these are:

  1. CIty of Kington upon Hull 99.03%
  2. Milton Keynes 82.23%
  3. Belfast 74.79%
  4. Epsom and Ewell District 66.92%
  5. Antrim and Newtownabbey 65.79%
  6. Exeter District 64.26%
  7. Ards and North Down 63.74%
  8. York 62.61%
  9. Tameside District 60.89%
  10. Salford District 60.6%
  11. Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon 60.28%
  12. Lisburn and Castlereagh 59.82%
  13. Mid and East Antrim 58.14%
  14. Coventry District 58.13%
  15. Derry and Strabane 55.96%
  16. City of Bristol 53.99%
  17. Tower Hamlets 52.88%
  18. Thanet District 52.54%
  19. City of Westminster 51.39%
  20. Barking and Dagenham 51.33%
  21. East Riding of Yorkshire 50.7%
  22. City of Peterborough 50.29%

The stats tracking site has had a small update to reflect the regional, unitary and county council figures, but the district council and constituency data is still showing our figures from Saturday 7th November.

The 2025 target the Government is working towards is a Gigabit based on, but its worth highlighting that given the current FTTP levels if the UK was to aim for 100% FTTP coverage by 31st March 2026 we would need to be adding 13,919 FTTP premises every day to our tracking. The 12,277 added yesterday falls just below that, but the day before we added just shy of 15,000 premises.?

Great to see progress. Seems to be a fair bit of activity in East Kent at the moment, noticed 'CT34NA' went live recently but is not on the may yet. A few more rural areas where I have spotted equipment hanging from poles should be going live soon!

My area in Cullompton, Devon has just gone live and my install is booked for this coming Wednesday. Not yet shown on your map. Thought it would be years before I saw FTTP here until the sudden descent of Openreach in the area back in June.

Yep it's on there now, few areas in the town now showing Openreach availability. There were some third-party engineers on my street on Sat also appearing to cable the area and a couple of months ago I had a leaflet from Gigaclear saying they were coming to the area - so I wonder if it was for them. Would be odd they'd double up here after an OR rollout?
